The Hanse 400 sets a new standard for combining speed, comfort, and ease of handling and was the European Yacht of the Year for 2006.

To keep the foredeck clear, the jib sheet leads from the clew of the sail to a block on a traveler (which runs in front of the mast), then enters the mast up high and joins the other control lines leading aft to the cockpit. The twin wheels combined with rod link steering system gives the boat an extremely responsive helm. The sail plan has plenty of power but it's easy to reduce sail with the one line reefing system. The cockpit has Swim Platformteak covered seats and the transom folds out to make a swim platform.

Down below the three cabin layout is well ventilated and bright thanks to the use of white laminates in the bulkheads. The galley features a fridge with both top and front access. The aft head has a separate shower stall.
